This opens up the use of easy to install lanterns and skypods that sit neatly on to a timber upstand in the new roof construction. These new light sources can be uPVC or slim aluminium and are available in many colours with the popular white, black and anthracite grey all on quick lead times.

FLAT ROOFLIGHTS

Flat rooflights are the perfect solution for bringing natural light in the room and visually expanding it. They are suitable for single storey home extensions or other dwellings with flat roofs. The flat rooflights we offer are made from high quality materials to the highest British Standards and accredited to BS EN 12150 and BS EN 1279. Modern flat rooflights is a winning combination of excellent thermal performance and attractive contemporary look.

Flat rooflight with black outer frame

As standard, flat rooflights manufactured as double glazed units with 18mm argon-filled cavity sealed with 6mm clear toughened safety glass with low emissivity that allows achieving U value of 1.1. It is lower than the required minimum of 1.6 of U value to comply with the current building regulations. The thickness and other specifications of the glass may vary for larger sized panes.

A few extra options are also available:

  • triple glazing

  • quad glazing

  • laminated glass

  • privacy glass- a sandblasted frosted layer applied on the top glass pane

  • higher upstanding

  • Pilkington Active Self-Cleaning Glass- an ultra thin outer layer applied on the glass that helps sunlight break down dirt and grime and rainwater wash them off

  • Pilkington Active Blue Self-Cleaning Glass- added blue tint increases solar control providing more comfortable temperatures all year round

  • Electric and manual opening rooflights

Flat rooflights can be manufactured in custom sizes or you can choose from the standard sizes:

Please note that all rooflight are made to order. Once the glass is cut and toughened, it is impossible to change the size. It is vital to measure the opening and specify other requirements correctly. Please read our Measuring and Installation Guide to get some helpful advice.

Measuring and Installation Guide

Measuring

  • Measure the structural opening where the rooflight will be installed.

  • Allow 5mm tolerances all around to allow the bottom pane of the rooflight to perfectly fit into the opening.

  • For example, the opening measures 1010mm over 1010mm. It is recommended to order a rooflight with a bottom pane with measurements 1000mm over 1000mm.

All units in standard sizes have a 100mm overhang all around the top pane. If the bottom pane measures 1000mm x 1000mm, the overall size of the top pane will be 1200mm x 1200mm. If required, or if the upstand width is wider, the overhang size can be produced in a bigger size.

Installation

Rooflight is a double/triple glazed unit firmly attached to the top glass pane with structural glazing silicone. It will be securely fixed to the timber upstand that protrudes above the roof and is built as part of the roof's structure. See the sectional view of a double glazed installed unit in the picture bellow. Please note, the glass thickness, depth, and specifications may vary for different options.

To complete the job successfully, carefully choose and use silicone to fit the rooflight following the manufacturer's instruction. Only use sealants compatible with the top of the stand, aluminium angle trim, glass, and setting blocks. Please note, that treating surfaces with a primer before applying silicone may be required.

  • Apply roof covering to the sides of the upstand to ensure the weatherability of the rooflight.

  • Ensure that the upstand protrudes at least 150mm above the roof and the pitch is 6 degrees to allow water to flow down.

  • Before sealing with silicone, test if water flows off the rooflight. Apply some water, and if it's pooling, then a higher pitch may be required.

  • The bottom pane should be supported on all four sides, once it's set in place.

  • The aluminium angle can be fitted before plasterboard and then covered with plasterboard, or the plasterboard can be fitted first, and then the aluminium angle. Also, timber batten with aluminium strip on the top can be used.

  • Use compatible low modulus silicone to attach the rooflight to the upstand. Apply the silicone following the manufacturer's instructions and then securely and tightly place the rooflight onto the upstand (see the picture bellow). To ensure the silicone spreads evenly and without any gaps, firmly apply pressure to the whole surface of the 100mm overhang. Finish off sealing applying the silicone all around with the silicone tool.

  • If necessary, use setting blocks to achieve the required sealant thickness.

  • You can proceed to fitting aluminium angle after the silicone is cured. To fit the aluminium angle, apply structural silicone, following the manufacturer's instructions, to its flat bottom surfaces and tightly fit the angle in place. Wipe off silicone excess with a finishing tool.
